What to do when you need to PCS quickly? If you’re in the military or a part of a military family, you understand what PCS is all about. Usually, you have time to deal with the things necessary to move from one location to another, but sometimes, it comes quickly. You may have to go from one side of the country to another and you may not need all the things you currently own.
Whether you have to go to the next state over or you have to move to an entirely new country, there are things you should be aware of. With the right steps, you can get everything ready for your PCS quickly and last minute. Here are a few tips to help you when you need to move fast.
Have your Orders Ready
If you have to break a lease or any other contract, you need to be ready with your orders in hand. Get copies made ASAP so that you will have them when you have to cancel housing services and break your lease.
Time to Donate and Have a Sale
Before you leave, a quick sale can be a great way to purge things you won’t need or can replace instead of taking with you. You may be limited to the amount of space you can fill with your belongings, so selling it is better than throwing it out.
Start with a yard/garage sale for a weekend and throw up an ad on Craigslist or in a local newspaper for the sale. Whatever you cannot sell, be willing to donate to a local thrift shop. Then you’ll have fare less to deal with during the move, which makes life much easier.
Outsource as Much as Possible
The low-cost way doesn’t always work when you have to move in a hurry. When you’re PCSing fast, you need to hire people to handle touch-up painting, mowing the yard and even packing and moving your things. A house cleaner will go a long way, as well.
These are just a few of the tips you can use to make PCSing in a hurry easier. Make sure you have all your paperwork in order and do anything you can to make the move easier on you and your family.
