US Army Selects Three Humvee-Replacement Prototype Teams

The US Army has chosen three teams to develop prototypes for a possible replacement for the Humvee. These three prototypes will compete for a contract that could be worth as much as $40 billion. Lockheed Martin Corporation will lead a team, as will BAE System Plc. A joint venture between General Dynamics Corporation and Humvee-manufacturer AM General are the third team. The contracts are valued at $45.1 million for the General Dynamics vehicle, $40.5 million for the London-based BAE, and $35.9 million for Lockheed Martin. The pentagon will hold the competition for the production contract upon completion of the development phase. The development phase is expected to last twenty-seven months. The new truck will be called the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle. The name is a result of the fact that both the Army and the Marine Corps will use the vehicle. This vehicle is intended to offer more protection from roadside bombs than the Humvee. It is also expected to be easier to maneuver than Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs). MRAPs, Rushed to Iraq last year, have proven too heavy for many missions. The JLTV program will involve ten versions, varying in weight from 3,500 pounds to 5,100 pounds.
